MUPB Wastewater Treatment Plant win 2008 EKWWOA & KWWOA Awards

Morehead Utility Plant Board Wastewater Treatment Plant wins 2008 Eastern (Region) Kentucky Water & Wastewater Operators Association Outstanding Plant Award and the (State) Kentucky Water & Wastewater Operators Association Outstanding Plant Award. The KWWOA Outstanding Plant Excellence Awards program is intended to highlight effective operation and maintenance programs. The award also honors the commitment of the wastewater systems leadership and plant personnel in maintaining the operation and maintenance of the plant.

The awards process included reviewing MUPB quality control, facility operation and maintenance, administrative management and customer service. This is the fifth time that the Wastewater Plant has won this award. (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2008)

Plant Board Employee Wins 2008 Chambers Award

Chuck Davis (L) Accepts the Chambers Award from Mike Nickell-General Manager, Morehead Utility Plant Board

Chuck Davis from the Morehead Utility Plant Board Wastewater Treatment Plant was awarded the the Eastern (EKWWOA) and the (KWWOA) Kentucky Water & Wastewater Operators Association Chambers Award.

Chuck has been employed with Morehead Utility Plant Board for 22 years as a Wastewater Treatment Operator, Maintenance Supervisor and as the Wastewater Plant Superintendent for 10 years. He currently holds a Class IV Operators Certification.

The Morehead Utility Plant Board Wins 2008 Natural Gas Award

Morehead Utility Plant Board Maintenance Department has been awarded The Kentucky Gas Associations Accident Prevention Award for 2008. This award is given to member companies that have maintained “OSHA Criteria “of zero injuries and incidences. During the 8196 man hours attributed to the natural gas system in 2008, Morehead Utility Plant Board maintenance employees were able to report zero accidents.

This is the fifth time in a row and seventh time overall that the Morehead Utility Plant Board has received this award from the Kentucky Gas Association, having also won it in 1990, 1995, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

MUPB Receives Stimulus Money for Sewer Rehab and Expansion

The Morehead Utility Plant Board was awarded $2,094,216 from the Kentucky federal stimulus money for sewer system improvements and line extensions. State Representatives Rocky Adkins, John Will Stacy and Senator Walter Blevins attended this month’s board meeting to present the check from the Kentucky General Assembly.

According to General Manager Mike Nickell, $801,000 will be used to extend sewer service (lines and pump station) to the Big Woods area, which will add 300 customers. The remaining money wil be used to rehabilitate existing sewer lines under roads in high traffic areas.

Contracts for the rehabilitation will be awarded on a per foot basis until the funds are gone. MUPB plans to rehab almost 21,000 feet of sewer line and lay 14,100 feet of new line from Pine Hills on Route 32 to Big Woods with the stimulus money.

2008 Area-Wide Optimization Program

The Morehead Utility Plant Board was awarded Area-Wide Optimization Certification for 2008, the third year in a row.

The Division of Water initiated the Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) in 1997. AWOP is an effort to optimize the performance of existing surface water treatment facilities. The goal of the program is to optimize particle removal and disinfection at all filtration plants to maximize public health protection.

The state level for particle removal is 0.3 NTU, but to get the certification a plant must keep the level under 0.1 NTU 95% of the time.

The Morehead Utility Plant Board Water Treatment Plant received the 2007 Eastern Kentucky Water & Wastewater Operators Association (EKWWOA) Outstanding Plant Award. The EKWWOA Outstanding Plant Excellence Awards program is intended to highlight effective operation and maintenance programs. The award also honors the commitment of the water systems leadership and plant personnel in maintaining and protecting drinking water and public water supplies.

We strive to provide safe drinking water by our commitment to compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and through our operations and maintenance programs. The awards process included reviewing MUPB quality of water produced, facility operation and maintenance, administrative management and customer service. MUPB also received the award in 2005.

2007 Area-Wide Optimization Program

Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet Department For Environmental Protection – Division of Water recognizes Morehead Utility Plant Board Water Treatment Plant for meeting the Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) goals for both settled and filtered water in 2007 and being considered a “Totally Optimized Plant” for turbidity/microbial removal.

Danny Caudill (R) Accepts the Mitchell Award from Mike Nickell-General Manager, Morehead Utility Plant Board

Danny Caudill of the Morehead Utility Plant Board Water Treatment Plant received the Kentucky Water & Wastewater Operators Association (KWWOA) Mitchell Award.  This award is given to an individual who has been involved in the water industry for ten or more years and has demonstrated a commitment to the improvement of the management and technical progression of the operation and maintenance of a water system.

Danny has been employed with Morehead Utility Plant Board for 28 years, first as a Water Treatment Operator and, for the last 10 years, as the Water Plant Superintendent. He currently holds a Class IV Operators Certification, and has the following organizational affiliations:
