About MUPB
The Morehead Utility Plant Board (MUPB), established in 1950 by the City of Morehead, Kentucky, began its journey with just six employees and 600 customers, operating on a modest budget of $18,000. Its primary mission was to provide essential gas, water, and sewer services to the community.
Today, MUPB has expanded significantly, employing 50 staff members and serving a diverse customer base that includes 1,434 gas customers, 3,381 water customers, and 5,409 sewer customers. The service area has grown to encompass 34 square miles across three counties: Rowan, Bath, and Fleming. MUPB maintains an extensive infrastructure with 57 miles of gas lines, 69 miles of water lines, and 155 miles of sewer lines. Additionally, the organization operates regional water and wastewater treatment plants. The current budget has surged to over $10 million.
Although MUPB is part of the municipal government of Morehead, it operates independently under the guidance of a five-member board. Its revenue solely comes from utility bill collections, which are reinvested into system operations and maintenance, debt repayment, and future expansion projects. This structure ensures that MUPB remains focused on providing reliable services to its growing customer base while maintaining financial stability.
